Description
Amelanchier alnifolia ‘Regent’ (Serviceberry) is a hardy deciduous shrub known for its compact size and adaptability to a range of growing conditions. Vibrant spring and fall colors make a standout addition to pollinator gardens, backyard patios and naturalized areas. Use as a specimen plant or plant en masse for a dense hedge, privacy screen, or windbreak.
Amelanchier alnifolia features clusters of showy white flowers in compact clusters which appear in early spring, before the leaves. Flowers give way to small edible berries, which then ripen to dark purplish-black in early summer. Berries look and taste like blueberries, and can be eaten fresh off the plant or used in jams, jellies and pies.
‘Regent’ can grow in a wide range of soil conditions in full sun to part shade. While drought tolerant once mature, be sure to water regularly until its established. This low-maintenance shrub requires minimal pruning which can be done after flowering. Root suckers are common, and if not removed, will result in a shrubby growth habit for the plant.
